CASE STUDY — Site Migration

Migration

From WordPress to world-ready. Two markets, one migration.

Wordpress Shopify

01

Executive Summary

In late 2021, TDMC partnered with Brand X to migrate their South Africa and India websites from WordPress to Shopify - unlocking e-commerce for the majority of their product range for the first time. Beyond a platform switch, the project meant rebuilding the brand's digital experience from the ground up: a custom Shopify design, a fully coded theme, content built for education as much as conversion, and the early architecture for a second-phase product bundling feature. The result was Brand X's first real e-commerce engine, and a foundation built to grow.

02

Introduction

Brand X has built its name on science-backed nutrition products for athletes, parents and everyday consumers. But for years, their website existed purely as a marketing and information hub - built on WordPress, with no real path for customers to buy directly. As demand grew across both the South African and Indian markets, that gap became harder to ignore. Brand X needed a platform that could match the ambition of the brand: one built to sell, not just to inform.

03

The Opportunity

WordPress had served Brand X well as a content platform, but it was never built to carry the weight of e-commerce. Migrating to Shopify meant more than swapping platforms - it meant giving Brand X a genuine sales channel for the first time across two key markets, and the infrastructure to scale that channel as the brand grew.

The Solution

Designing for the brand, not just the theme

We started with Shopify's Blockshop theme as a foundation, then reshaped it to reflect Brand X's identity - balancing the structure of a proven e-commerce framework with a look and feel that felt unmistakably Brand X.

Engineering the build

Once the design was signed off, our development team customised and coded the theme to match it precisely, layering in the functionality Brand X needed to showcase its full product range. Products were built out with additional metafields, giving the team a way to surface richer product information than a standard listing could hold.

Content built to do double duty

Alongside the commercial build, we developed a content layer designed to educate as much as it converts - health articles, nutrition guides and recipes that gave customers a reason to engage with the brand beyond the product page, reinforcing Brand X's credibility as a nutrition authority.

Laying the groundwork for phase two

With the core platform live, phase two introduced the ability for customers to build and purchase their own custom product bundles - turning a standard storefront into a more personalised shopping experience.

Conclusion

For Brand X, this project marked the start of a new chapter - moving from a content-only presence to a true e-commerce business. By approaching the migration as a full rebuild rather than a like-for-like switch, TDMC gave Brand X a platform designed to grow alongside the brand, not just to host it. With the foundation now in place, Brand X is positioned to keep building on this momentum - phase by phase.
